jjjjjLawrence Peter (Yogi) Berra was born on March 12, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri. Yogi got his nickname from a childhood friend who said that Berra had a striking resemblance to a Hindu snake charmer named Yogi. When Yogi started out, he was turned down by the Cardinals General Manager who said of Yogi, "He'll never make more than a Triple A ball player at best." One time, when Yogi was in the minor league, he drove in 23 runs in one game. When Yogi turned 18 he joined the Navy. After W.W.II was over, the Giants manager offered the Yankees $50,000 for his contract. The Yankees general manager did not know who Yogi was, but if the Giants wanted him that bad he decided he was worth keeping. Yogi was known for his wild swing, but quite unpredictably, he only struck out 12 times in 597 at-bats. He is also famous for his funny quotes like, "It's deja vu all over again." During his career, he accomplished these things:
