We once lived in caves until father earned some money! Our cave was mostly carved out of a hill. The cave had only one room. In the room there was a fireplace, a bench that sat next to the fireplace, and we had a table, wooden chairs, and a large chest. Very few homes have such items. Our neighbors only had a straw mattress and a fireplace! We were considered lucky!

After father had money and better materials we built a better home. Our second home wasn’t a cave, it was made out of wooden boards. Our new type of home had two stories to it and a long winding staircase. It also had a brick chimney and small windows.

Our new neighbors were very wealthy people. They had very elegant furniture, like great tables, chairs, sofas, clocks, mirrors, and the best beds. Their beds were tall four poster beds with an overhead cover. If that wasn’t good enough, they had curtains that would swing around to keep them warm during the nights of the winter. They even had feather mattresses.

My family is extremely large! We have children (brothers, sisters, cousins you name it) parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Everyone has a job to do. The men hunt birds and animals, plant and harvest food. The younger girls and women make candles and soap. We also weave thread into cloth. We think that laziness is a sin, because there is always work to be done.

If we want to go to visit someone out of town we would probably have to stay in a tavern. Women are lucky if they can stay with a family or a relative that is in that town. Unfortunately, the men have to stay at the filthy taverns. There is no heat. You have to sleep with other people that you have never met! There are at least four to six people cramped in a room. The room has no lock either. The tavern is almost like the cave we first settled in!! Once I had to sleep in a tavern and I will never, ever forget it for the reasons I have already mentioned!!
