Fraktur

Fraktur is a piece of paper that shows anything special. Example: a newlywed couple, birth date, etc.  I once made a Fraktur for a good friend because he was getting married.

You Need:

  • Tracing paper that is 4 ¾ inches wide and 6 ½ inches long
  • Tea-dyed paper 11 inches wide and 8 inches long
  • Calligraphy pen
  • Colored pencils, crayons, and colored pens.

Step 1: On the tea-dyed paper, draw a border ¾-inch from each side and color it.

Step 2: Then on the tracing paper draw a half-oval about 3 inches long. This is so you can trace it onto the tea-dyed paper twice to get a complete oval that is symmetrical. The oval surrounds the middle of the Fraktur, which will hold the important information that is to be displayed.

Step 3: Outside the oval on your tracing paper, draw designs such as hearts, flowers, geometric patterns, etc.

Step 4: Tape the tracing paper onto a sunlit window. Tape the tea-dyed paper over the tracing paper so that ½ the paper covers the tracing paper, not including the border. Then draw your designs from the tracing paper onto the tea-dyed paper.

Step 5: Undo the tape and flip over the tracing paper. Re-tape the tea-dyed paper so you can trace the other side symmetrically.

Step 6: Take all the papers off the window. Throw the tracing paper away unless you want to practice your coloring. Color the tea-dyed paper designs as you like.

Step 7: With the calligraphy pen using spare paper with a similar-sized oval, practice what you will write on the Fraktur until you are satisfied. Then write it on the Fraktur.
