Even thousands of years ago people in different parts of the world understood how important learning was so they sent their children to school. Ancient schools were very different from our schools.

Imagine going back in time to Egypt, Greece, Rome or pre-Columbian America. How would you like to use knots on  a rope or an abacus instead of a calculator?

What would you do if your parents chose your occupation before you were born!

Would you like to walk barefoot and shave your head in ancient Sparta and steal food in order not to starve? I bet even if you don't like your school cafeteria too much, you wouldn't prefer the Spartan way of getting your lunch.

Your desks and chairs are probably more comfortable than sitting on the floor at your master's feet.

Remember, there weren't any computers or Crayola markers or construction paper. You would have to write on limestone or waxed wooden tablets with a stick called stylus. Be sure not to make any mistakes because you don't have an eraser!

And last, but not least, how would you like to get whipped for day-dreaming or being lazy?!... or even worse, having to breathe smoke from a chile fire or having your body pierced with sharp thorns.?!  In comparison, detention seems almost like a dream come true!
