Solving Equations by Using Multiplication
To solve equations using multiplication you can use the mutiplication property of equality.This says that for any numbers x,y, and z, if x=y , then xz=yz. Move your mouse over here to see this shown with pictures
Example 15=z/14
Multiply each side by 14. 14*5=14(z/14)

70=z.

Now Check.
5=z/14
5=70/14
5=5.

Example 22 2/3z=3 2/9.

This is more complicated. Change it into an improper fraction

8/3z=29/9.

8/3z*3/8=29/9*3/8. (multiply each side by 3/8, the reciprocal of 8/3)

24z/24=84/72.

z=87/72

Simplify. z=29/24 or 1 5/24.

Practice these:
z/5=7 Do you multiply by z?, 7?, or 5?
Is the answer 20?, 40?, or 35?
x/5=4/10 Do you multiply by x?, 43?, or 5?
Is the answer 6?, 10?, or 2?
