Before the refrigerator, people kept their food
in cellars or outdoor window boxes in the wintertime. As the weather
warmed up, they kept it underwater in a nearby lake, stream, or even a
well. Later a deliveryman would deliver ice blocks. In the
1920’s and 30’s there were tiny compartments to store the ice blocks.
In the 1950’s and 60’s there was the automatic defrost and the automatic
icemakers.
