The Flute

The flute is a wood-wind instrument.  The player holds the flute in a horizontal position.  Today metal flutes are made with keys and tone holes.

The piccolo is a small flute.  The piccolo gives off a very high sound.

The alto flute is wider and longer.  The base flute produces a broad tone because of the lower pitch.

The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Chinese used instruments similar to the flute.  Some Arab tribes today still use the Egyptian vertical flute.  Flute players in the 1600’s and 1700’s played on cone-shaped instruments made of wood.  In 1846, Theobald Boehm of Munich made the first cylindrical flute of metal.  He also arranged the modern fingering that makes it possible to place the openings more accurately and improves the tone.
