John White John White was an artist. He observed Indian villages and even tried to learn the language. He was appointed Governor of the lost colony by Sir.Walter Raleigh. When the colonists ran out of food they sent John White back to England to get more but he was stopped from sailing because of war with Spain. The Queen finally permitted him two small ships. When he returned to Roanoke all he found was CRO carved on a tree. He decided that CRO meant Croatoan so he left Roanoke to find his family, but storms prevented him from searching any further. After returning to England John White went on another voyage to Ireland.
Manteo Manteo was an Indian that helped the colonists. He went to England with another chief. Sir Walter Raleigh appointed him Lord of Roanoke. Manteo was baptized at Roanoke.
Wanchese Wanchese was one of the two Indians taken to England on an expedition to Roanoke Island, along with Manteo. The colonists thought that he was a friend to the English. But were proved wrong when he apparently he had led an attack and killed a colonist that was out hunting for crabs. They learned he had gone back to his tribe to fight off the English intruders. One theory of how the colonist disappeared is that Wanchese's tribe killed them.
Virginia and Eleanor Dare Virginia Dare was the first baby born in the new colony. She was named after the New World. Virginia was born to Eleanor and Ananyas Dare. The governor, John White, was her grandfather. Dare County may have been named after this family. Some people think they have found "Dare Stones". They would have been carved many years ago by Eleanor Dare to represent members of the family.
