Drought
It was found that close to the time the colonists were on Roanoke Island, the area was experiencing a severe drought.  To determine this theory, trees from this period on Roanoke Island and surrounding areas were examined.  Rings dating around this period were found to be close together, an indication of little rainfall.  No water meant no crops or animals and the colonists would have starved to death.
