Birds and Animals of North Carolina

Bald Eagle
The bald eagle is not bald.  Its head is covered with white feathers.  Eagles eat fish and small animals.

Bobcat
A bobcat is a wild cat that lives in North America.  It has long legs, a short tail and pointed ears.  A bobcat grows to be 30-40 inches long.  A male bobcat can weigh up to 24 pounds.  The female weighs up to 16 pounds.

Gray Squirrel
A gray squirrel eats nuts, seeds and buds.  They live in trees.  A gray squirrel can live to be eight to fifteen years old.

Porpoise
A porpoise is a sea mammal that is smaller than a dolphin.  They grow to be four to six feet long.  They are usually bluish black on the top and white on the bottom.  They come up for air about four times a minute.

Rabbit
A rabbit is a small mammal.  They have long ears and short tails.  They can weigh from two to eleven pounds.  They eat herbs, tree bark and vegetables. 

Black Bear
The black bear can grow to be 5 feet tall.  They can weigh 200 to 300 pounds.  Black Bears eat a variety of things from berries to meat.  Not all black bears are black, some are cinnamon
colored.

Deer
The white-tailed deer grows to be 3 1/2 feet tall at the shoulder.  Deer eat grass and other plants.

Otter
A otter is a mammal.  It can grow to be 30 inches long.  Its tail is 15 inches long--that is half of its body.  It has short strong legs.  Otters eat fish, small mammals, birds, frogs and crayfish.
