Plants on Galapagos

Scientists think that the plants on Galapagos floated there on wind or water currents. Many of the plants have changed so much to adapt to their particular island environments that they have become new species. Forty percent of the plants on Galapagos don't live anywhere else. They are endemic to the islands.

Mangroves are trees or shrubs with stilt–roots that grow near the water. The branches are swollen at the nodes. Nodes are where a leaf or a bunch of leaves grow.

Opuntia is found in the arid or dry zone. The plants have spiny leaves. They often grow very tall. Some of them have very brightly colored flowers.

Ferns are very hairy. The fronds or leaves are feathery. There are a many times of ferns and they grow everywhere. Their habitat ranges from wet bogs to desert washes.
