Madagascar is 300 miles to the east of
Africa.
It has been
separated from Africa for at least 150 million years. Madagascar is about the size of Texas.
It
is the world's
fourth-largest island. It is like no other island anywhere on earth
and is the
oldest island on Earth.
Its
isolation, size, and age has
resulted
in
the unique
evolution
of its species. Madagascar is the most biologically diverse place on earth. Sadly, it is
also the
most endangered, because of over population and misuse of its natural resources.
Madagascar
has the largest rainforest containing animals found nowhere else on earth.
Unfortunately, 60 to
85% of forest has been destroyed through slash and burn agriculture. This is
called deforestation. Find out
more about the flora, fauna, and endangered species of this island paradise
which the home to tenrecs, lemurs, and the big tomato frog.
