| What is Biodiversity? Biodiversity is the study of all species, both plants and animals, and their interaction with their environment and with each other. It is the variety of all life on our planet. Our website focuses on biodiversity of islands. Island biodiversity is unique because animals and plants have evolved in a special way. They have been isolated and have adapted to their environment over millions of years without coming into contact with other species. Scientists who study this field are called biogeographers. We became interested in biodiversity because we have our very own collection of strange and exotic animals in our classroom. Travel with us to Hawaii, Galapagos, New Guinea, Madagascar, Indonesia, Australia, Fiji, Samoa and our classroom to understand the concept of biodiversity. Meet our non-human biodiverse classmates - a gecko, a millipede, a tarantula, a dragon, a boa constrictor, a scorpion, a turtle, a hamster, and frogs. Take a look at videos of our pets. Enjoy our original drawings of the flora and fauna of islands. Try out our fun activities like a web quest, quiz, flip book, and word scramble. Send us a poem or information about your bioregion. And remember, life will always find a way to flourish! |
