Bali

Bali is one of the islands in Indonesia. It is a geologically young island. Its climate is tropical. Bali’s coast is about 33,978 miles and has one of the biggest coastlines in the world.  Most species of Bali are not endemic - that's a fancy way of saying they don't come from Bali originally. Many of the species come from the nearby islands of Java or Sumatra.

The Bali Starling

The Bali starling is a very beautiful bird. It has white plumage and a turquoise colored face. The Bali starling is almost extinct. In 1999, there were only 32 left. The Bali starling's habitat was destroyed to make farms and coconut plantations. Many of them were captured and sold as pets. In the 1970's hundreds of them were sold in the United States.

The Bali Tiger

These bones are all that's left of the Bali tiger.

The Bali tiger was the smallest of all tigers. Deforestation forced the tigers into the mountains. In the early twentieth century, hunting parties killed the remaining tigers.  The Bali tiger is extinct. The last tiger died in September 1937.
