Habitat
of the Orca
The Orca lives in the water if you
haven't figured it out yet. Where in the water do they live? For starters they
live in oceans not rivers, lakes, or bays. Sometimes a stray whale will venture its
way out to a bay and get stuck until human help comes around. The Orca prefers to be
in cool, icy waters approximately 52 degrees. Which for water, that could kill a
person of hypothermia. Hypothermia is when a warm blooded mammal can't take the
temperature and the body's entire system slowly shuts down. The Orca has an inch of
fat or blubber that I already mentioned, keeps their body nice and warm in almost any
temperature. The Orca lives mostly in warm tropical waters like in Hawaii and
California. They occasionally are found in Alaskan and British Colombian waters.
Unfortunately, almost 50% of Orcas in the world today will live in captivity for
most of, and in some cases all of, their lives. They will never know where their ancestors
came from. The others were kidnapped from their homes and put through years of heart
break and the want to be where they feel they belong. Because they are so often found in
captivity, scientists have added captivity to their habitat list. Oh, I bet you
figured it out by now, but the Orca is a carnivore. In other words they only eat
meat not plants.
