Submarines

Did you know “sub” means “under” and “marine” means “water”?  If you put them together it says submarine or underwater.  Pretty cool, huh?

Did you know submarines are just ships that sail underwater.  They can dive thousands of feet and stay down there for long periods of time.  Here are some names for submarines such as sub, DSV and U-boat.  DVD’s are used for exploration in deep areas.

In 1867 a Frenchman wrote a book called, “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.”  It was about a boat that could dive in water and not come up for long periods of time.  His name was Jules Verne.  He called his imaginary boat, Nautilis.  When he wrote his book, people wondered how a boat could go under water.
