Who Are Those Aztecs Anyway?







        The Aztecs believed in gods and spirits.   The Aztecs believed that one of their gods' spirits had come but it was the Spanish instead.  The Spanish soldiers defeated the Aztecs on Aug. 13, 1521, but who were these people the Spaniards called the Aztecs?
        What we know about the Aztecs is from pictures and artifacts.
        The Aztec capitol was Tenochtitlan. The city was rich with gold, silver, and rare jewels. The kings' castles were splendid buildings.
        The Aztec nation lasted from 1325 to 1521.
        The Aztecs had many spirits to worship, but mainly worshiped the sun god.  Aztec priests offered human sacrifices to make the gods happy.
        The Aztec language is called Nahuatl. They used pictures.  They  represent words.
    The Aztec people had a 360 day calendar.  It had 18 parts and 20 days each.  There were five empty squares called "empty days".  On these days all work stopped, they also fasted all five days.  At the end of the five days the priests gave a human sacrifice.
        The Aztecs had three classes of society: the nobles, the merchants and craftsman, and the peasants.
        Most people were farmers.
        The Aztec boys were married at 20 and girls at 16.
        The Aztec kings were elected for life by a council of high officials.
