YO-YO HISTORY
Yo-yos first began
in China, then Greece, and then India and became popular with adults and
children. It became so popular in the 1700s that a British museum
got a picture of King George the VI (6th) yo-yoing! Wow, King George
the 6th!
The country
that is the best known for yo-yos has to be the Philippines. In the
1500s Filipinos used yo-yos as weapons to defend themselves or to kill
their food (animals). Then it became a toy and the Filipinos became
great players. Soon yo-yos became decorated with carvings, which
probably took a long time to carve.
The most famous
brand of yo-yos in the USA is the Duncan yo-yo. Donald F. Duncan
first got the idea of a yo-yo when he saw it in San Francisco in 1928.
In 1965 Duncan Yo-yo Company went bankrupt! I wouldn’t want to be
in his shoes!
Flambeau
Plastics soon bought the company. Now the well-made wooden yo-yos
are not to be found any more. The world record for “around the world”
is 102 times! WOW!
