A woodwind instrument is one that is played by vibrating a reed or blowing across a hole.  They first got their name because they were wood and you need wind to play.  Nowadays you still blow wind through woodwinds, but they are made of wood as well as plastic, nickel, silver, brass, etc. The flute is unlike any other woodwind because it doesn't use a reed, and you blow across not into.
