Up

The tuba is very large in size and sound. We all now that the longer the instrument the lower the sound. The voice of the tuba is low and loud, and because of its size it runs out of breath quickly. Many may think that it can only play low sounds but it can also play quick snaps like the percussion instruments. The band or orchestra needs the tuba to play the background and weight. The length of the tuba would be about 27 feet long. The largest tuba is a monster 8 feet high and if stretched out it would be about 45 feet long in length. There is a type of tuba that is designed to be played at marches and can be supported at the shoulder. The sound is projected forward instead of upward. Only some tubas have an additional forth valve that extends its range of notes.

History of the Tuba

The tuba went through many changes since 1835. Almost every military band had a tuba. The tuba had many names such as Fluegelhorn, Euphonium, Helicon, and Bombardon. The German composer Richard Wagner helped in the evolution of the tuba.

A baritone is a smaller version of the tuba.^_^
