Mount Terror is a large basaltic shield volcano that forms the eastern part of Ross
Island. Numerous cones and domes are on the flanks of the shield. Most of Mount Terror is
under snow and ice. Rocks exposed at the summit of the volcano have not been studied. Low
areas on the east flank of the volcano have been studied. Dates obtained for these rocks
range from 0.82 and 1.75 million years.
Another volcano is Mount Erebus is on Ross Island in Antarctica. The mountain elevation is 12,280 ft. Its first recorded eruption was in 1841. The most recent eruption was in 1980. This volcano was recorded erupting almost every year during the 1970s.
