Great Sphinx Soap Carving

A sphinx is an imaginary creature that has a human head and a lion's body.  The Great Sphinx in Giza, Egypt is over 4,500 years old.  It is about 240 feet in length and about 66 feet tall.

The sixth grade students at our school made soap carvings of the Great Sphinx in their Social Studies class.  To make your own carving all you need is a bar of soap and a carving knife.  Be careful not to cut yourself!  Estimate the length of the arms and the height of the head before you start carving.  After you have carved the head and body, you can add more details.

The following are some photos of the carvings made at our school.  Thanks to Mrs. Caldwell and the sixth graders!
