Ferdinand   Magellan

 

        Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer and navigator who sailed under the flags of Portugal and Spain.  He led the first expedition to sail all around the world and the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean.  He died in the Philippines but his crew finished the job.  People think that it was the best navigational feat in history.

 

    Magellan was born in 1480 in Sabrosa in northern Portugal.  His father  was Rui de Magalhaes and his mother was named Alda de Mesquita who belonged to the Portuguese nobility.
