1760 - King George III ascends to the throne of England

1763 - Treaty signed between England and France ending the French and Indian

            War. Canada and the continent east of the Mississippi River added to

            Great Britain's growing empire

1765 - Parliament passes The Stamp Act as a means to pay for British troops on

           the American frontier. Colonist violently protest the measure

1765 - Stamp Act repealed , but on the same day Parliament passes the

            Declaratory Act asserting it's right

1775

April 19 - Minutemen and  Redcoats clashed at Lexington and Concord

June 15 - The congress named George Washington commander in chief of the

               Continental Army

June 17 - The British drove the Americans from Breeds Hill in the Battle of                  Bunker Hill

1776

Feb. 27 - The patriots defeated the loyalists at Moon's Creek Bridge

Mar. 17 - The British evacuated Boston

July 4 - The Declaration of Independence was adopted

Aug. 27 - The Redcoats defeated the patriots on Long Island

Dec.26 - Washington mounted a surprise attack on Hessian troops at Trenton

1777

Jan. 3 - Washington gained a victory at Princeton

Oct. 7 - The patriots defeated the British in the second Battle of Freeman's Farm

1778

Feb. 6 - the United States and France signed an alliance

1779

Feb. 25 - British defenders of Vincennes surrounded to George Rogers Clark

June 21 - Spain declared war on Great Britain

1780

Aug. 16 - The British defeated the Americans at Camden

Oct. 7 - Americans frontiersmen stormed the loyalists positions Kings Mountain

1781

Mar. 15 - Cornwallis clashed with Greene at Guilford Courthouse

Sept. 5 - A French fleet inflicted great damage n a British naval force at 

              Chesapeake Bay

Oct. 19 - Cornwallis forces surrendered at Yorktown

1782

Nov. 30 - The America and British signed a preliminary peace treaty in Paris

1783

April 15 - Congress ratified the preliminary peace treaty

Sept. 3 - The United States and Great Britain signed the final peace treaty in

               Paris
