Wildfires are unwanted and are caused by lightning or humans.  They are put out because they threaten lives, land property, survival of the forest, and because they are difficult to control when they start.   Wildfires are a risk to firefighters and cost millions of tax dollars.

Because wildfires have been controlled over the years, when they do happen they are larger and more intense.   For example in 1994, it cost over $1 billion to fight wild fires across the country.  Wildfires also killed 34 firefighters in that year.

In the Sequoia's, the Kaweah fire was started by a car’s exhaust pipe in dry grass.  It burned 4,479 acres and risked the safety of over 1,500 firefighters and cost $4 million.  They are trying to stop wildfires by projects such as Mineral King Risk-Reduction Burn Project.  It is a plan to reduce the chance for intense wildfires as well as fighting to stop them.
