The Giant Sequoia Trees have been standing since the time of Christ, and they still stand today. But today there are fewer Sequoias. By the time the Ice Age came the Sequoias were gone from most of the Nothern Hemisphere. Mountain ranges became too cold for the giant trees to survive. Now there are very few forests left with these Sequoias. Today the only Sequoia species left are Giant Sequoias in the Sierra Nevada’s in central California.

The trees were believed to have been named after a famous American Indian leader Sequoyah.  His mother was Cherokee and his father was a German immigrant. Also known as George Guess, he was a writer that recorded the language of his tribe.

These fantastic trees are great monuments of nature, but they are all most gone. Today it is illegal to cut down Sequoias because they are rare. But everyone must do their part to protect the forests and these trees so they do not become extinct.
