People of Ancient Rome

Jobs and Occupation

    People in the Roman Empire were mostly farmers. About 90 percent of the people in the empire were farmers. Other people traded with other countries. Some people ran markets on the streets of Rome.

Transportation
    The Roman army built many roads across the Roman Empire. The roads helped speed up the movement of the Roman soldiers. The Romans had a highly organized postal service that depended on the roads.

Language

    The Ancient Roman spoke Greek, the Ancient Romans also spoke Latin.

Clothing

    The Ancient Romans wore clothes made out of  wool and linen. Both men and women wore tunics. Men wore a toga over their tunics. women wore pallas.

Food

    Wealthy Romans had eggs, vegetables, and shellfish for a first course. The main course was meat, fish, or fowl. For dessert the wealthy Romans had honey sweetened cakes and fruit. Poorer Romans had porridge, bread, fruit, olives, and cheese.

Religion

    The early Roman religion believed in gods and goddesses for everything in life. The main Roman god was Jupiter. Later in the Ancient Roman Empire, Christianity became the main religion.
