Easter Island is 63 square miles long and has no streams running through it. It is a
volcanic island.
There are about 1,600 people that live on the island in a village called Hanga Roa.
There are over 6,000 ancient statues on this island. The statues are all around the edge
of the island.
We think the ancient islanders believed that the statues had supernatural powers.
The statues are made of hard volcanic rock.
Some statues weigh as much as 25 tons.
To move them, they rolled the statues on logs
and every time the statue went too far they would get a log from the back and put it in
front so that it wouldn't fall. They moved them as far as 14 miles like that.
The statues are taller than a three story building. The statues are eyeless.
They were built using stone hand picks. Half-carved statues have been found in the
rocks of the island. Wooden tablets were also found on the island. No one has
figured out what they say or who wrote them.
