Kuna Chief
The chief is called a Sahilas. (Proun. saa-hill-as) The chiefs meet every night to solve important problems and they also make important decisions for their people. The point of these meetings are to make the village a better place to live.
The women pick a chief. This is surprising, because back in say 1904, women weren't able to vote! Men have no choice whatsoever in who is the chief. They could get picked so obviously they can't vote. The women try to pick the right man who could help the village the most. The rainforest people have very different cultures and traditions from us , as you can see.
Once the chief is picked, he chooses a helper called a Deputy Chief. The Deputy Chief helps with important decisions and tries to answer questions. He has to be very wise. The Deputy Chief is just like a vice president. If the chief would get sick and die, the Deputy Chief would take over. He would pick a new Deputy Chief. This process would keep repeating. This is how the system works.
