Lauhala The lauhala or hala is a tree that grows on most Pacific islands. The left end of the leaf is very pointy. At the base (right) end it's very fat and in a circle shape.

The Hawaiians gather the brown leaves which are better for stripping. There are thorns at the midrib and leaf edges.

Next they they wash the dirty Lauhala leaves by dunking them into the ocean and stream. Then when they are finished washing the leaves they gather them and cut them.
