FEATHERWORK

Past

Capes were used by the lower-ranking chiefs. The longer capes were used by the high-ranking chiefs. The more yellow feathers on the cape, the higher the rank of the chief. Featherwork was carefully stored in wooden containers until they were needed in the state function.

Present

The Hawaiians got the feathers from the native birds. Today these birds like i'iwi, o'o, mamo, apapane, nae and ahu'ula are extinct or either suffering declining populations. The feathers were used for making leis. These Hawaiian native birds were victims of prey and habitat destruction. Predator animals like the rat, dog, cat and mongoose were introduced. Alien birds also brought various diseases like chicken pox and malaria. The things that are made today out of feathers are neckties, pins, flowers, combs, hats, earrings, fans, belts, broaches, chokers, feather standers (kahili), gourd rattles ('uli 'uli), and anklets and bracelets (kupe'e).
