It's All Greek to Me!

When the Romans adopted Greek myth, they used their own names for all the different gods and goddesses.  The Romans named planets and other celestial bodies after these gods.  In modern times, when the planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were discovered along with some small asteroids, they were also given names of the Roman gods.  For example, Posiedon's Roman name is Neptune, which is one of our planets.  The two largest asteroids Ceres and Vesta, are named after the Roman names for Demeter and Hestia.  Some other words that come from Greek mythology are:
  • Psychology, after Psyche
  • Nike, after Nike
  • Victoria, after Nike's Roman name
  • Panic, after Pan

In addition, these are some words, followed by the Greek translation, followed by the pronunciation.  These will come in handy if you ever visit Greece.
