The Book of the Dead

The Book of the Dead is a group of magic spells and formulas that were illustrated and written. It began to be used in tombs around 1600 BC. The text was supposedly read by the body on its way to the underworld.

The Book of the Dead was supposed to help the deceased overcome obstacles in the afterlife. It did this by letting the deceased know passwords to turn into different animals and overcome hazards. It also gave them protection with the gods.
