Common cold - an infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract caused by more than 100 kinds of viruses. The symptoms are typical of respiratory infections caused by bacteria as well as allergic conditions, hay fever and asthma. No cure is known and no preventive drug has been found. Some drugs help only with symptoms.

Chicken Pox - a childhood disease that spreads easily by direct contact or through the air. It is contagious.

Pneumonia - It is a disease of the lungs. There are about 50 different kinds. It can be cause by either virus or bacteria, or even breathing in vomit.

Tetanus -

Hepatitis - There are many types of Hepatitis. Many are transmitted by injection with dirty hypodermic needles. However A can be contracted also by contaminated food and B  from blood transfusions.

Rabies - Caused from the bite of an infected animal. There is a vaccine, originally developed by Louis Pasteur, for the disease, which is a series of daily injections and boosters. The original vaccine was made with inactive rabies virus, but today live virus is in the vaccine.

Mumps - an infectious disease which affects the glandular and nerve tissues. It is spread from person to person and is highly contagious.

Warts - caused by the papilloma virus. They are firm raised areas of the skin that are usually removed, but the plantar wart is difficult to treat or remove.

Yellow Fever - It is noncontagious, but infectious disease caused by a virus carried by mosquitoes. Symptoms are high fever and jaundice. No treatment is known.

Polio - a disease of the central nervous system, sometimes resulting in paralysis. US mass inoculated with a live virus given orally in 1963.

Cholera - severe infectious disease which can kill within a few hours. Prevention is a matter of sanitation. Some vaccines are available for shortening duration and protection, but just for a short time.

Measles - highly contagious and causes high fever. Measles was common for childhood diseases but since the development of a vaccine in 1963, cases are much fewer. Small red dots appear on the skin and eyes are sensitive to light.

Small Pox - highly contagious viral disease which is often fatal, but today appears to be to be gone.
