EDGAR ALLAN POE
On January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, at 33 Hollis Street, Edgar Allen Poe was born. Elizabeth and David, his parents were actors who lived in poverty. Edgar traveled along with his parents, as they journeyed the world. Edgar A. Poe was orphaned in the year of 1811, and John Allan of Richmond, Virginia raised him.

Edgar eventually moved to a little brick house in Philadelphia. In the fall of 1840, his "Prospectus of the Penn Magazine," a monthly literary journal, was first issued. This was a great success.

Edgar Allan Poe's work included such things as poetry, articles, long tales, horror, and detective stories. Some favorites are The Murders in the Rue Morgue, the Mystery of Marie Roget (sequel) and The Purloined Letter. As you can see, he made a big difference in the 1800's, but we still talk about him now, in the year 2000!
