“I’m innocent” I told the judge over and over again.
“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you god?”
“I do.”
“Tell me again, what happened the night of June 26?” my lawyer asked me.“
"I will start when I walked out of my house. I went to my car and got in it, and turned it on. I started to drive to the museum for the night shift on patrol, when I suddenly stopped as a car flew passed me, and dropped something out of the car. It was a small black box with nothing in it. It couldn’t have been more that four square inches. I got out of my car and picked it up, and put it in my car, and started driving. I got a good picture of the license plate.”
The person across the room gave me a mean glance, but I tried to ignore it.
“I got back in the car and started driving again. When I got to the museum, there were about ten police cars in the lot that had blocked off the entrance. I was informed that a burglar had gotten past the guards and stolen the biggest uncut diamond and had gotten away. They said he got away in a black Chevy, and was heading north, and that the car had been stolen. Before I entered the building to investigate the scene, they searched me, and took out the black box. When they opened it, they found the diamond. They immediately arrested me, and took the diamond. I told them what happened, and gave them the license number. The next day, they found the person driving the stolen car and had the same fingerprint as the box. The problem was, that my fingerprints were on the box too. Nothing happened since then until now in court.”
“Would anybody like to question him?” my lawyer asked.
The other suspect rose up from his chair and walked over to me. He asked, “So, smartallic, I am not stupid. Even I know that the inside of the box was red velvet, and now it is blue. That means that the diamond is a fake.”
“Objection, your honor.” My lawyer stood up, and said, “How do you know that the box was now blue if you didn't see it after it was stolen?... Unless you took it!”
The other suspect just stood there, and
finally said he did it! He spilled everything about how I was set up -
the whole story. Finally, I was innocent.
