Mozambique

Geography

Mozambique is a country located in the southeastern coast of Africa .Mozambique has many fine harbors.The capital of Mozambique is called Maputo which is also the largest city and has the main port.

History

People have lived in what people now call Mozambique since the 4000's B.C. Arabs lived in Mozambque near the 800's.The first portugese explorers to visit Mozambique was in the year1497.They establised trading post there in 1505 Mozambique became a slave -trading center. In 1885 Africa was divided into various European powers,Mozambique was a Portugese colony. Most railroad and towns were built in the late 1800,s and early 1900's this made the Portugese population rise.

Frelimo was establised in 1961 as a gorverment guerilla movement, this began military attacks against the portugese in 1964 and gained control of part of northern Africa fighting continued for 10 years and in 1974 Portugal grant independent to its colonies.

People

All Mozambicans are black Africans.There are some other group such as Europeans,Pakistanis,and Arabs these people make up less than one percent of the population.Some Mozambicans belong to groups that speak Bantu.Lots of Mozambicans are farmers,some of this farmers cut and burn the trees so they can get space for planting.

Economy

Mozambique is not well developed. The major activity is agriculture. It is the leading producer of cashews. There are some other important crops such as cotton, sugar cane, starchy roots, coconuts, and cassava. Some people fish for fish and shrimp in the Indian Ocean. The economy depends mostly on the payment of neighboring nations on payment for use of railroads and port facilities. Coal is also mined in the central part of the country. The Cahora Bassa Dam provides electric power for Mozambique and is sent to other countries in Southern Africa.

Government

The President leads Mozambique's government. He is elected for five years. He appoints a Prime Minister and a Cabinet to work with him. The Prime Minister heads the cabinet which is named Council Member. There is an elected assembly that makes the laws. There are 250 members that serve five years. Mozambique is divided into 11 provinces and the Court that is over them is the Supreme Court.
