Ghana is a located in the western part of Africa and is one of the smaller countries on the continent.It is famous for its gold mines timber products and is the second largest producer of cocoa in the world.Ghana's neighboring countries are Togo,Burkina Faso and Cote "d" viore [Ivory Coast.]Ghana supplies large amount of electricity to Togo,Burkina Faso and The Republic of Benin.
Ghana has two seasons,the raining season and dry season.The raining season is between late April to October, and the dry season is between November and late march.Ghana is very close to the equator and therefore during the dry season temperatures sometimes rises as high as 100 degrees Fareinheit.It is much cooler and very comfortable during the raining months.The capital of Ghana is Accra and it has a population of 18 million people.The country is divided into ten regions.Each region has a particular crop that it produces.The northern sector produces yam,sweet potatoes and some other tuber crops.The southern sector produces corn,rice,vegetables.Cocoa is mainly grown in the forest zones,which is the central portion of the country.
Ghana has ten regions. Each region has a majority tribe of its own.The Northern Region has its people known as Dogombas. The Upper East Region comprises of a tribe called Mamprusi and the Upper West Region is a tribe called Frafra. Down the Frafra's to the south, is a region called Brong Ahafo, they speaka language known in Ghana as Brong. The Ashanti's occupies the whole of the Ashanti region, and they are part of the tribe that forms the majority speaking Akan language. West to the Ashanti region is a tribe called the Adansi's. They also speak the Akan language with a slight dialect. The Fante's share's boundary with the Adansi's and they are at an area right down at the western coast of the country. In Accra which is thecapital, lived another tribe known as the Ga's.East to the Ga's along the coast is another tribe known as Ada The south eastern portion of Ghana which borders the Republic of Togo is another group of people called the Ewe. Ghana compromises of various tribes some of the languages of which are dialects. However the Akan language is the majority tribe in the country.
The history of Ghana dated back as far as the 16th century. Then there was the Songhai Empire which spread all the way to what is present day Mali. Later after the arrival of the Europeans,the empire was broken by the British, French,and Germans. The present day land of Ghana was named The Gold Coast for about three hundred years.
Promment citizens of The Gold Coast fought British colonialism for a long period of time. The British were very strong and as such many opposition leaders of the Gold Coast were either killed or jailed.However on March 6th 1957, led by Dr.kwame Nkrumah Ghana became the first Black African country to attain Independence.
Nkrumah was however overthroned in Military coup whilst he was on a presidential visit to Romania A military gorverment headed by Genral Ankrah was sworn into office. Ankrah resigned later only to hand over to his socond command Gen Afrifa.
In 1972 another military coup over thrown the Afrifa gorverment and nine Supreme military council headed by.Colonel Ik Acheampong took over. Ghana then became a military rule state with coup upon coup.
In June 1979 there was another bloody coup which brought the gorverment of A.F.R.C. lead by a fligth lieutenant called Jerry John Rawlings. Rawlings however organiged an election which brought Ghana's president Hilla Liman into office. Two years later in Dec 1981, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings once again siezed power. He re-organized another election which he fraudelantly won.However his second term re-election was hailed as a free and fair.He is still the president,but his term is due to expire as at December 2000, and he cannot stand a third term.
Ghana's econony depends on various activities. Cocoa:-Ghana is the worlds second largest producer of Cocoa, and the country exports most of its dried cocoa bean to The United States and Great Britain. It also has one of the finest timber woods in the world of which Britain is the country;s most Trading Partner. Gold also earns the country a lot of money,as well as diamond, bauxite and maganese.coffee is another foreign ex change earner, and together with other cash crops such as pineapple, bannana, copra, and sweet potatoes,Ghana derive's about five percent of the overal annual budget from these crops.
Ghana manufactured some good aluminium products which supplies most countries on the west coast.The country is proud to have two big sea ports one at Tema and the other at Takoradi.Countries such as Burkina Faso,Mali and Guinea disgharges their imported needs through Ghana's ports, this earns the country a lot of revenue.
Ghana runs the best and most efficient airline on the west coast to Europe and the United States, it serves most West Africans.Tourism is another sector of the economy, it has been estimeted that by the year 2015 tourism will be the country's main foreign exhange earner.
The staple of Ghanians depends on regional bases.However "Fufu" seems to be consumed by majority of the people in the country. It is made from a mixture of cooked cassava and plaintains pounded together. The by-product is a sticky dough-like food which Ghanians eat by tearing a piece with the fingers and dunking it into a bowl of soup, and then swallowing.
The people who lives in the south eastern part of the country, prepares a food called banku, it is made from corn dough and eaten with an okra prepared soup.The northerners depend on mostly yam, potatoes, sweet potatoes,wheat, and rice they mostly grow these foods. The ga's in the Greater Accra region has their main food called Kenky. This is also made from corn dough, but it is wraped with dried corn shells and cooked for overthree hours. They eat it with fried fresh fish and hot pepper similar to salsa. Besides, rice wheat-cereal, and all flour food is eaten all over the country.
The tempreature in northern Ghana is very humid. Therefore residents found a way out. Their house are of round shape, constructed out of mud.The roofing is wrapped of dried thick grass, to form a shape of a hat at the top. Most of the heat is absorb by the grass and therefore making the room a little bit cool.Most villagers in Ghana construct their homes with mud.This is due to lack of money for a better structure, however the roofing differs from region to region.Villagers along the coast uses from asbetors, to slate, to wood for roofing.Buildings in the big cities are quite different. Accra, the nations capital boast of high rise mordern buildings, first class hotels, as well as very beautiful private houses scarted all over. It is a mordern city growing rapidly.Same can be said of Kumasi, Takoradi, Tema, Cape-coast,Elmina, and other growing cities in the country.
Ghana has a multi party democracy gorverment, the president is elected to a four year term and he can only run for a second term. Like the United States, representatives are elected from their various districts and sent to what is called parliment.They also run for four years, for which they must be re-elected.
The ruling party in Ghana today is the National Democratic Party [NDC] and the president is Jerry John Rawlings. The main opposition is the National Patriotic Party [NPP]. There are other parties such as United National Convention, The Social Democratic Front and the Convention People's Party, to make up the opposition.
