Light is reflected off of objects into the eye and on to the retina.  In turn the rods and cones turn the image into electronic nerve impulses that travel via the optic nerve to the underside of the brain called the lateral geniculate body.  Then the brain converts the nerve impulse back into an image.  To really understand this, it will help you to read the inner anatomy page and the vision abnormalities page.
