Skeletal System

All the bones in your body make up the skeletal system. The skeleton is a strong flexible framework. The skeletal system is one of the most important parts of the human body.  We need this system to protect and support our body so we can work, move, and play.  There are about 206 bones in the skeletal system.  In just the hands and arms alone there are 60 bones.  Bones which are beside each other are joined together by joints.  Our joints either move like those in our arms and legs  or they do not move like those in our skull.   Bones are held together in place by strong bands of tissue called ligaments.
Our skeleton is made up of two main parts.  One main part of the skeletal system is the axial skeleton. The other part is called the appendicular skeleton.
The axial skeleton is made up of the head, neck, and trunk.  In the axial skeleton, the spine forms the axis which supports the other parts of the body.  At the top of the spine is the skull and it contains such bones as the frontal bone, temporal bone, zygomantic bone, maxilla, and mandible.  The spine made up of separate bones called vertebrae.  The top seven are called cervical vertebrae and they are the neck bones.  Next there are twelve thoracic vertebrae.  The 12 ribs on each side of the body. The ribs are connected to the thoracic vertebrae in back and the upper ribs attach to the sternum in the front. The last five vertebrae are called lumbar vertebrae and they are in the lower part of the back.
The second main part of the skeletal system is the appendicular skeleton.  The bones that make up the appendicular skeleton are up of the arms, legs, and their supports.
