Knights were the armored horse soldiers of the medieval times. Noblemen were trained to become knights but many did not make it because they lacked the skill, courage or success in battle. Many knights fought in contests such as jousting when they were not at war. These contests offered a chance to practice and earn prize money. The knight was supposed to use his strength to protect the weak, to be courteous and fair and to defend the church.
