Kings ruled most of the countries in Europe during the Middle Ages. Some famous kings included: Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionhearted, and Frederick the Great. The king had the duty to punish law breakers, protect their country, and to make huge legal decisions. They also had to provide knights to fight in the army.
