Scientists think about 100,000 avalanches occur each year. In North America, avalanches occur more often in the Western Mountains. Avalanches may slide a few feet, or for miles. no two avalanches are the same. Trees can protect mountainsides by holding the snow in place. Many rescuers use avalanche dogs to help find survivers. An avalanche happens when snow slides off of a mountain. The results may be deadly and kill many, or the avalanche may be small and not harm anyone.
