Rock Swap Activity

We are looking for students who would like to participate in a "rock swapping" activity.

Here is how it works!

Collect samples of rocks near your home or school. (Small samples not larger than 2 or 3 inches in diameter are the best.)

Identify your sample rock and make an identification card for it. Include the name of the rock and the date and location of where you found it.

Wrap the rock in several layers of newspaper, place it in an envelope, and send it to us.

We will "swap" you a rock. In other words, we will send you a rock from our collection.

We will take a picture of your rock and post it on our website with the information that you provided.




Our goal is to collect a rock from each state.
