This Planet Really Rocks

Lamar University February, 2000

In February we went on a field trip to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. We visited the Geology Department to learn more about rocks and minerals. We talked to several geologists.

We were able to observe many different kinds of rocks and minerals. We looked at minerals under the microscope. We learned how to use different tests to help identify rocks and minerals. We actually got to perform some of the tests on the minerals. We got to use real acid to test the rocks. We also did the hardness and streak tests. We observed all the different kinds of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. We also visited their museum. Thanks to those people at Lamar who took the time to help us learn more about rocks and minerals. We had a great time!
