Flute
The flute is in the woodwind group. They are called woodwinds because they
were originally made of wood. Most woodwind instruments are tubes. The
sound is made by air vibrating inside the tube. Flutes are woodwinds that
are now mostly made of wood. Some of them are side or edge blown. Others
are end blown. The flute player changes pitch by opening and closing holes
along the length of the flute which changes the volume of air that is vibrating.
Flutes have been made throughout all the world. Native American flutes
are made of wood and have feathers around them. Many of these were used
for courting and were know as love flutes. Another flute made in India
called the Bansuris flute is similar to Native American flutes but has
no feathers.
