The bass clarinet was invented towards the end of the 18th century in Europe. Some thought it was to replace the bassoon in military bands. The bass clarinet is one of the largest members of the clarinet family and it plays one octave lower than regular clarinets. The bass clarinet uses a reed to make sounds. A reed is a piece of thin wood that vibrates against a fixed surface. Other reed instruments are clarinets, saxophones, and non band instruments such as bagpipes.
