Does & Don’ts of Being Funny
Do’s
- Do use things that are considered safe. Humor is a painful thing told
playfully, so use humor that rounds on you.
- Do use a style that you are comfortable with, and have
used before.
- Do use humor that relates to your topic.
- Do be organized and to the point.
- Do make sure the story fits your audience.
- Do speak clearly.
- Do be aware of the audience’s response. If the
joke doesn't work, don’t use it again.
- Do update the characters in your story to stay current
and to relate to your audience.
- Do use situational humor to get the audience to your
point of understanding.
- Do stay flexible and be able to rely on anecdotes, epigrams, and exaggerisms when
they are usable.
Don’ts
- Don’t offend. Stay away from blue humor and wit.
- Don’t say something a second time that wasn’t funny the
first time.
- Don’t let the story contrast with your speech.
- Don’t laugh at your own jokes- let the audience
decide if they’re funny.
- Don’t use another comic’s material and attempt
to make it look like it’s your original humor. Give credit where credit is
due.
- Don’t use jokes that are not short and to the
point.
- Don’t use old and out-of-date material.
- Don’t ignore the importance of timing and rhythm
in presentations.
- Don’t belittle yourself and sacrifice your
reputation.
10. Don’t jump around. Stay on the
topic and the audience.
