Sleeping Beauty PrologueThe members of the court of King Flores tan XXIV are gathering in the hall of his palace to celebrate a momentous event. After many years of marriage, the Queen has at last given birth to her 1st child, and today is Princess Aurora's christening. The King is talking with Cattalabutte, the master of ceremonies. They are worriedly talking about guest list and if they could have possibly skipped over anyone. Aurora's 6 fairy godmothers and their escorts arrive with gifts. They gather around the princess to offer her blessings, and one at a time they dace for her. The fairies give their gifts. The Lilac Fairy is the last to give, and then there is a rumbling sound growing louder and louder that is heard. The King can tell that this is not a storm, so he summons Cattalabutte and analizes the guest list. He then yells at Cattalabutte for being such a fool because he had forgotten to invite Carabosse! Rats now enter and cover the floor, and Carabosse, the oldest fairy, descends from her black carriage. She demands to know why she wasn't invited. The King apologizes over and over and tells her it is an unforgivable mistake. She does not except their apologies, yet she still has a gift for the baby. She says, "Your daughter will grow to be the most beautiful lady in the land, but on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on a golden spindle and die!!" Everyone is horrified. The Lilac Fairy tries to comfort the crying mother and finally gives her gift. She made it so that instead of the princess dying, she, as well as the rest of the court will fall into a deep sleep for 100 years, until a handsome prince will find the castle and kiss Aurora. Then the spell will be broken. Act 1Everyone is arriving for Aurora's 16th birthday. In the garden, 3 old hags are hunched over spinning wheels, and everyone stops to watch. Spinning has been outlawed since Carabosse's curse.
The festivities begin and the people begin to waltz. Aurora arrives and embraces her parents. Her parents present 4 princes to her and they each give her a rose. They each dance with her and afterwards she runs out of the garden. Aurora returns to the garden and dance for everyone and so does her friends. The King is so wrapped in the dancing that he does not notice an uninvited guest standing in the back of the garden. She turns toward Aurora and holds out a gleaming object. Aurora, thinking that it is a gift, takes it and continues to dance. The King sees the so called "gift" in her hand, and cries in horror as he realizes that it is the spindle. He runs to her side but it is too late. She falls to the helplessly falls to the ground, and the guest looms over her, drops her cape, and reveals that she is Carabosse. She laughs a wicked laugh and it begins to rain. She disappears in a puff of smoke. The King and Queen believe that their child is dead, but the Lilac Fairy comforts them and reminds them of the gift she gave to Aurora 16 years ago. The King orders the 4 princes to carry her to her chamber, and as the court follows, the Lilac Fairy waves her spell all over the kingdom, and they all fall into a deep sleep. Act II100 years have passed. A ways away from King Flores tan's palace, a hunting party gathers beside a lake. Prince Florimund is part of the group. The Prince is very rich yet very unhappy. One of his companions, a beautiful countess, offers to dance with him. Reluctantly, he joins in a dance. The horns signal the hunt, and the Prince urges the rest of the group on and he stayed behind. It is now dark and the Prince is alone. He longs for love. Now he bows to his unknown visitor, and asks. "Who are you? Why are you here?" It is the Lilac Fairy. She tells him where she is from and tells him that the love he is searching for lives there. "Who is she?" he asks. The fairy tells him of Aurora's story and curse. " You are the one who can wake her with a kiss!" He
wishes to see her and an image appears in a tree, and then almost as if she were
a real person dancing with the fairies. " I wish to marry her!!!" He
exclaims to the Lilac Fairy. She disappears and he is depressed. The fairy tells
that she was just an image and that she will take him to the real Aurora's side. They arrive at the King's castle. Carabosse and her rats have been spying on them, and they run ahead to the palace. The Lilac Fairy tells her to leave them alone, for her curse has expired. Blinded by her goodness, Carabosse backs away. When Florimund enters the castle, he is amazed at all of the people dressed in old fashioned clothes, covered with one century of dust. He wants to know where the princess is, so the fairy show him to Aurora's bed chamber, where she looks as beautiful as she did when she fell asleep. He kisses her and everyone begins to awaken. Prince Florimund announces that he wants to marry her and the King says that nothing would please him more. Act IIIEveryone in the Kingdom is at the wedding. They all dance and sing and are very merry. When the last dance is over, The Lilac Fairy and her attendants surround the happy couple, as the Sleeping Beauty is embraced by the prince who brought her back to life. The End
