Ecstasy, or MDMA,
(methylenedioxymethamphetamine), is a sythectic drug that acts simultaneously as a stimulant and a hallucinogen. Users sometime take Ecstasy for the sense of well-being, the sensory distortions caused by the drug, or to stay awake through an hours-long rave. It stimulates the central nervous system and produces hallucinogenic effects. It can be mixed with anything (sometimes amphetamines and acid, or even simple paracetamol) which means you can never be certain what you're getting.
Ecstasy has many harmful effects. Which are: You have a dry mouth, your blood pressure goes up and your heart starts beating faster. You may feel sick. Later, when the high has worn off, you feel tired and depressed. This can last a couple of days. You might have diarrhea. If you have taken a big dose, you might feel restless and confused, and not be able to sleep.
Nobody is quite sure what the long term effects of ecstasy are, although it has been linked to liver failure and brain damage. Even so, there have been many deaths since 1988 that have been put down to Ecstasy. Most of them have been related to what the people were doing at the time they were on he drug. Ecstasy is popular in clubs because people sweat heavily and lose a lot of water. If they don't drink any water they become dehydrated which is similar to suffering from severe heatstroke.
